Superman

The tennis star Andre Agassi is an amazing tennis player and also an amazing philanthropist. He has been disputed as the most charitable athlete of his generation. He has started a Boys & Girls club that helps 2,000 children a year in athletics and academics. Perhaps Agassi is most famous for starting a college preparatory academy in his home town in Las Vegas. This academy has changed the lives of many young children and has changed a town from lowered academic standards to “Exemplary”. At his website http://www.agassifoundation.org/ there are eleven different programs started by this amazing tennis athlete. Instead of holding onto his wealth, he has improved the lives of many children across the United States.

Grades

October 31, 2008

I do not necessarily like grades, but I do not hate them either. I think they have evolved too much and have become almost worthless to test how smart a person is. I have met a lot of students with straight A’s and some of them come off to me as idiots. The ability to take tests well does not mean they are able to be smart and successful in the real world. However, grades are very important to getting into college. That is the main reason why people take them so seriously, even though a lot of them realize they have almost become meaningless. I agree with the author in the article that people are putting too much trust into grades. It is true they are going on without challenge, people are starting to take them for granted. People think that if someone has an A, well then they must be a genius. That is not necessarily true. I also believe that it is close to impossible to change the way we grade. Students, teachers, colleges, and parents have relied on them way too long to change them overnight. The change would have to be very long and difficult. In a perfect world, grades would represent how much a person has learned in a class. In the real world, grades show how well students have learned the grading system. I do not want to say that grades are completely useless. Having a good grade in a class MOST of the time shows you have learned the material. Grades have evolved in the wrong direction, but they are still worth something. A student that is failing a class probably has no idea what is happening in the class and has not learned that much. I still feel that grades need to be changed more to reflect what the students have learned, not how well they can take tests.

Economic Crisis

October 6, 2008

Just to let everybody know, I do not know very much about finance or how our economy works. However, I still have an opinion about what we should do as a country. I agree with the bailout plan. I think the banks are in a lot of trouble and need all the help they can get. If we did not bail them out, our economy would just plummet. Not only would our economy fail, so would the world’s. As for the amount, I have no idea. Seven hundred billion dollars is a ton of money and hopefully it can get us out of this situation. Or our plan backfires and we waste seven hundred billion dollars. I can understand how some people disagree saying that we like in a free market economic system and the government should not intervene. However, there are always extremes. I would rather bailout the major banks then have our whole economy fall apart. The banks should be punished for letting themselves get into this situation, or at least the CEO’s of the banks. Basically the American economy is in a slump. People are spending less because they’re worried, people aren’t investing as much, and people just don’t have any confidence in our once dominant economy. All we need is a little boost to get the economy back to where it used to be.

Meanest Mom on the Planet

September 21, 2008

In my opinion, the mother had every reason to sell the car. However, she did take it one more level than necessary. She could have easily just posted an ad, not gotten publicity, and sold the car. Everybody would have been happy, except for the son. According to the article, the mother had set up some ground rules about the car earlier. If this is true, than the mother should have sold the car. As everybody knows, booze and cars do not mix too well. If I found alcohol in my son’s car, I would flip out, and probably sell his car. In the son’s defense, he might not have had any plans to drink and drive. He might have just wanted to enjoy himself on a saturday night. The mother should not have drawn as much attention as she did to the incident. She basically humiliated her son by posting the ad the way she did. For that, the mother is to blame. Now everybody knows what happened between the son and the mother. All the teachers now know, coaches, priests, and many other people you would not want them to know. What the mother did might haunt the son for a very long time.

Junior Year

September 5, 2008

I have never had a blog before, so this is a new experience for me. In my Junior year of high school I would love to graduate with a high grade point average and play on the varsity baseball team. Accomplishing these goals would really help me out as an individual, and they would help me get into a good college. Sports are most of the time an important aspect of my life, and playing on the varsity team would make me feel great and have fun. Both of these goals would help me get into a good college. I am still unsure of what I want to do when I grow up, maybe something in finance or engineering. Another goal of my Junior year is to get a real job. I have had short-term jobs, like umpiring, but I want a real job. Actually, umpiring can be a real job but I was not very good at it and was politely asked to do something else.
